Is RV Insurance Expensive?

RV parked in a lot

RV insurance is subject to a lot of the same influence factors as your normal car insurance policy. Depending on the type of vehicle and coverage limits, you may pay more or less for RV insurance than for your vehicle.

Understanding the factors influencing your RV insurance premiums can help you understand your rates and find ways to save money.

Driving Record

Keep in mind that individuals only have one driving record between car insurance and RV insurance. Whether you’re driving a car or a recreational vehicle, your driving record will influence how much you pay for insurance. A poor driving record or a history of accidents may raise your RV insurance rates by a hefty amount.

Type of RV

There are different classifications of RVs that can affect your insurance rates differently. Larger and more expensive RVs generally cost more to insure. They also may need more coverage, which costs more. If you’re not sure about the classification of your vehicle or the insurance you need, be sure to speak with your insurance agent.

Credit Score

Your credit score can also affect the cost of your RV insurance, as well. A low credit score is seen by an insurance provider as high risk when it comes to missing premiums. To save money on RV insurance, you can work to build your credit score by paying off debts such as loans and credit cards.

Frequency and Type of Usage

Along with the type of RV you have, the way you use it matters, as well. Some RVs are used simply for vacations while others are used as a full-time residences. The more you use your RV, the more you may pay for insurance, especially if you travel substantial distances, such as taking a road trip across the U.S. or even out of the country. Full-time RV users, also known as full-timers, will generally pay more because their RV now doubles as a home. This means that they will need additional insurance for the RV while it is being used as a living space, which can make the rates for RV insurance rise.

No matter what type of RV you use or what you use it for, it is important to have the right type of insurance to cover your needs both on and off the road. If you have any questions about your policy, be sure to speak with an insurance agent.
